History of Bastar

As history of this region explains, that once Bastar and Dantewada were part of erstwhile princely state of Bastar. Brother of erstwhile Warangal (present day Telangana state) king Pratapa Rudra Deva namely Annama Deva had founded a small kingdom of Baster in the early 14th century. This region was ruled by many regional kings until India attained freedom in 1947. Government of India acceded many of princely states into it including Bastar and Kanker states thereafter and merged both into the newly formed Madhya Pradesh state’s Bastar District. While new state of Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh, the Bastar District became its part. Earlier this district had distinction of India’s largest district with its total area of 39,114 km². In the process to reorganize various districts Bastar was also divided in 1999 to create the present-day district of Bastar, Dantewada and Kanker. Bastar still served as Bastar Division. This district was further bifurcated in 2012 to create Bastar and Kondagaon districts. Until 2000 it remained one of the famous districts of 16 districts in Madhya Pradesh until it became part of the newly carved out Chhattisgarh state. At present this district maintains its distinction of part of the Red Corridor districts of India.

Culture of Bastar
